When a wisdom tooth can cause problems

Wisdom teeth may not fully erupt or may grow in an unfavourable position. Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. If the tooth is not causing any problems and the examination reveals no inflammation or other condition, the dentist may simply continue to monitor it.

When to come in for an examination

  • Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth

  • Recurring inflammation of the gum around a partially erupted tooth

  • Food getting trapped around the wisdom tooth or difficulty cleaning it

  • Decay in the wisdom tooth or an adjacent tooth, or a problem visible on an X-ray

  • A dentist or orthodontist has recommended assessing the tooth for extraction

Examination and treatment

From examining the wisdom tooth to healing

  1. 1) Examination first, then a decision

If you already have a dental X-ray, you can bring it with you. If you do not have one, we can take one at our clinic. The X-ray examination is covered by health insurance. The dentist will assess the tooth and the surrounding area and arrange an X-ray examination if needed. The image shows the position of the wisdom tooth, its roots and its relationship to the surrounding structures. Only then can the dentist decide whether it is appropriate to monitor the tooth, remove it with a standard extraction or plan surgical removal. Before the procedure, the dentist will discuss the proposed approach, possible risks and expected healing with you. Please also tell the dentist about any medication you take regularly and any significant health conditions. Do not stop taking prescribed medication on your own.

  2. 2) Standard or surgical extraction

The procedure depends on whether the tooth has erupted and how it is positioned. A standard extraction may be sufficient for an accessible wisdom tooth. If the tooth is partially or completely hidden beneath the gum or bone, a surgical approach may be required.

  3. 3) What happens during the procedure

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia. During a surgical extraction, the dentist may release the gum, expose the tooth and, depending on its position, remove it whole or in sections. The wound will be treated and stitched if necessary. The exact approach can only be determined after the examination.

  4. 4) What to expect after wisdom tooth extraction

After the extraction, you may experience pain, swelling, bruising or stiffness of the jaw. The extent of these symptoms depends on the difficulty of the procedure and on individual healing. Before you leave, you will receive specific instructions on caring for the wound, eating, cleaning your teeth and returning to your normal activities.

  5. 5) When to contact the dentist

Contact the dentist if the bleeding does not stop, if the pain or swelling becomes significantly worse, or if you develop a fever, an unpleasant taste in your mouth or feel generally unwell.

Velmi milý a ochotný kolektiv. Chodíme moc rádi. 🤩🫠

Wisdom tooth extraction

What patients ask before wisdom tooth extraction

No. At the dentist's discretion, a wisdom tooth that is causing no problems and shows no signs of disease can be monitored during regular check-ups. Removal is considered based on your symptoms, the examination of your mouth and the X-ray findings.
Common reasons include pain, swelling, recurring gum inflammation, trapped food or decay. However, a dentist may also identify a problem on an X-ray before the tooth starts to hurt.
No. It depends on the tooth's position and whether it has erupted. An accessible wisdom tooth can sometimes be removed with a standard extraction, while a tooth beneath the gum or in the bone may require a surgical approach.
If you already have a dental X-ray, you can bring it with you. If you do not have one, we can take one at our clinic. The X-ray examination is covered by health insurance.
Healing varies from person to person and depends on the extent of the procedure. Pain and swelling commonly occur during the first few days and should gradually improve. The dentist will give you precise aftercare instructions and arrange a follow-up appointment if needed.
Tell the clinic when booking your appointment and bring a list of your medication. Do not stop taking medication or change the dose on your own; the dentist will determine the next steps based on your health.
We offer an inhaled analgesic for adults for 2,000 CZK. Please discuss whether it is suitable when booking your appointment.
We also perform extractions for patients who are not registered with our clinic. A referral from a dentist is helpful but not required.
